demarcation alone, and this he did, sending them a description and a map of it, showing the exact course of the line. Of this description I inclosed a copy in my note of the 12th May, together with a copy of the map on which the frontier is laid down.
Your Highness' note takes no notice of the information furnished by me with regard to the false map produced by the Chinese Commissioners, and the proceedings of the Chinese Commissioners.
In view of the unsatisfactory character of the reply which has been furnished to me, is Majesty's Government have now instructed me to inform your Highness that, after what occurred in 1899-1900, they cannot consent to appoint officers to carry out a joint demarcation, and that they will continue to regard the line laid down by Sir George Scott as the provisional boundary which Chinese officials and troops cannot be allowed
to transgress.
I avail, &c. (Signed)
ERNEST SATOW.
